Igor Martínez is a versatile artist whose career has evolved from instrumental virtuosity to orchestral conducting and composition. Trained within the celebrated Venezuelan music education program El Sistema, his journey began with the tuba, an instrument with which he quickly demonstrated exceptional talent recognized internationally, reaching the podium five times in prestigious competitions in France, Germany, and Italy.
As an orchestral musician, Igor Martínez established himself as tubist of the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela under the baton of Gustavo Dudamel. His international career is confirmed by regular invitations to world-class ensembles, collaborating with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra, and the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, among others.
Driven to expand his artistic horizons, Igor shifted his focus toward conducting, earning two Master's degrees at the Geneva University of Music (HEM) (Tuba and Conducting). Currently, he is furthering this transition by pursuing a Doctorate in Music (D.Mus.) in Orchestral Conducting at the Université de Montréal (Canada).
On the podium, he has conducted various ensembles in concerts and masterclasses, including the FVG Orchestra (Italy), the Constanța State Opera Orchestra (Romania), the Orchestre des Pays de Savoie (France), and the Nouvel Ensemble Moderne (Canada).
His profile as an Assistant Conductor has been solidified in high-level productions. Highlights include his participation in the Les Jardins Musicaux festival, where he collaborated on the recording of the soundtrack for the film The General (Buster Keaton) with the ARTE network, playing a key role in artistic supervision. He also enriched his artistic vision through a professional immersion with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, participating in the production processes of operatic repertoire.
His commitment to teaching has been constant, having been appointed professor at the Simón Bolívar Conservatory of Music at the age of 18 and later leading the National Tuba School of Venezuela during its creation. Recently, his creative and educational work stood out in his collaboration with the Geneva Chamber Orchestra (OCG) in a dual capacity: as arranger for the Symphonic Hip Hop concert with artist KT Gorique, and as leader in the conception and direction of the "Paper Orchestra" pilot project, inspired by El Sistema's pedagogical model.
His creative career as a composer and arranger features the premiere of symphonic works with the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela, as well as various commissions and chamber music works performed in the United States, France, and Switzerland. His scores are published by Saker Music, and he is a founding member of the Bolívar Brass Trio. Igor Martínez is a Wessex Tubas Artist.
